Preventing Family Violence: The Critical Role of Language Services in Legal Settings

May 23 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Understanding the nuances of language and culture is paramount in ensuring equitable access to justice and support services for culturally and linguistically diverse individuals in Australia. Statistics reveal that non-English speaking multicultural communities in Australia have a much lower understanding of violence against women (22%) in comparison to communities with high English proficiency (48%). This is a direct result of the language barriers affecting family violence & legal services.

Presented by Polaron Language Services & Myriad Kofkin Global, this forum aims to improve communication & introduce firm policy frameworks for linguistically diverse communities facing family violence issues. The panel is comprised of esteemed industry professionals from the language, family violence, law enforcement & legal industries. You will hear from the CEO of Safe and Equal, Tania Farha, Senior Sergeant at Victoria Police, Maha Sukkar, Pharmacist & Migration Lawyer, Emily Dimitriadis, Director of Afghan Women on the Move Inc, Maryam Zahid and Polaron Language Services very own founder & director, Eva Hussain JP.

Key topics for discussion include:
1. The impact of language barriers on accessing legal support and services.
