From Ancestry to Citizenship: A Successful Evening Exploring EU Opportunities
Earlier this month, we welcomed a group of engaged and curious attendees to our Melbourne office for our From Ancestry to Citizenship information evening. With around 20 participants joining us in person, the event created a warm, interactive environment where people could explore a question that is becoming increasingly common:
Could I qualify for European citizenship?
The answer, as many discovered, is often yes or at least worth exploring.

A Room Full of Stories, Questions and Possibilities
What made the evening particularly special was the diversity of stories in the room. Some attendees arrived with detailed family trees and carefully preserved documents. Others came with only a vague memory of a grandparent or great grandparent who once lived in Europe. We were also honoured to welcome Edith, a 97 year old Holocaust survivor, who joined us with her extraordinary story of survival, resilience and strength. Her presence was a powerful reminder that behind every citizenship journey is not just paperwork, but a deeply personal history shaped by loss, courage and perseverance across generations. Many were simply curious, wanting to understand whether a second citizenship could open new doors for themselves or their families. What united everyone was a shared sense of curiosity and possibility.
Breaking Down the Process
During the session, our team walked attendees through the key elements of EU citizenship by descent in a way that was practical, clear and grounded in real examples. We covered:
- How citizenship can be passed down through generations
- Why eligibility often depends on specific historical timelines
- Common misconceptions that lead people to assume they are not eligible
- The types of records and documents needed to build a strong application
- The step by step process involved in confirming or applying for citizenship
We also explored the key countries many Australians and Americans are connected to, including Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Italy and Slovakia. For many attendees, it was the first time these complex pathways had been explained in a way that felt accessible.

More Than a Presentation – Real Conversations
One of the highlights of the evening was the opportunity for attendees to speak directly with our team after the presentation. These conversations are often where things truly come to life. People were able to ask specific questions about their own backgrounds, share family histories and in some cases, receive initial guidance on whether they may qualify. Some even brought along original documents, which allowed for a more detailed and personalised discussion.
This is where curiosity turns into clarity and where the journey often begins.
Why Interest Is Growing
There is a clear and growing interest in European citizenship, and it is easy to understand why. For many, it represents:
- The ability to live, work and study across the European Union
- Greater global mobility and flexibility
- A meaningful connection to family history and heritage
- Long term opportunities for future generations
What surprised many attendees was just how accessible this opportunity can be, especially with recent legislative changes across several European countries expanding eligibility.

A Reminder: Eligibility May Be Closer Than You Think
One of the key messages from the evening was simple but powerful:
Do not assume you are not eligible.
We regularly meet individuals who initially believed their connection was too distant or too complex, only to discover that they do, in fact, qualify or are very close to qualifying.
In many cases, the difference comes down to understanding historical laws, timelines and how citizenship was passed or retained across generations.
Looking Ahead
Following the success of this event, we are excited to continue creating opportunities for people to explore their eligibility in a supportive and informative environment. If you were unable to attend, or if the topic has sparked your curiosity, there are still plenty of ways to start your journey.
