Legal & Language Services for Multicultural Communities Experiencing Family Violence

May 23 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Name(Required)

Understanding the nuances of language and culture is paramount in ensuring equitable access to justice and support services for culturally and linguistically diverse individuals in Australia. Statistics reveal that non-English speaking multicultural communities in Australia have a much lower understanding of violence against women (22%) in comparison to communities with high English proficiency (48%). This is a direct result of language barriers affecting multicultural communities & domestic violence services as well as a lack of legal policy frameworks in place. In light of this, it is imperative that we seize the opportunity for reform.

Presented by Polaron Language Services & Myriad Kofkin Global, this webinar aims to improve communication & introduce firm policy frameworks for multicultural communities facing domestic violence issues. Throughout the webinar, five esteemed speakers from legal, advocacy, and interpretation fields as well as those with lived experiences will share insights and best practices for navigating challenges within multicultural communities’ domestic violence cases.

Through a panel discussion and live Q&A, discussions will surround introducing culturally competent interpretation services for approaching survivors with limited English proficiency, the domestic violence issues within these communities, and how the government & legal sector should reform for change.

Key topics for discussion include:
1. The impact of language barriers on accessing legal support and services.
2. Culturally sensitive strategies for effective interpretation and translation in domestic violence contexts.
3. Legal frameworks and policies promoting language access in the domestic violence sector.
4. Collaborative efforts to enhance language services and legal support for multicultural communities.
